Household waste disposal is subject to the rules and guidelines set by the Massachusetts DEP. Please read and understand the handout we offer before disposing of your waste. Leaf and yard waste can be accepted at the transfer station. They are prohibited by the State Waste Ban Regulations.
Household Hazardous Waste
As a resident of Leverett you have access to at least six Household Hazardous Waste collection events each year. Pre-registration is required.
To see the complete list of collection event dates, times and locations, go to http://www.franklincountywastedistrict.org/HHWreciprocal.html .
The minimum fine for illegal dumping is $300 per occurrence and possible revocation of driver's license. We report all illegal dumping and suspicious activity to the police.
Composting
Leverett residents can purchase an Earth Machine backyard compost bin at a subsidized price of $25. The subsidized compost bin can only be purchased at the Solid Waste District office. Visit http://www.franklincountywastedistrict.org/composting.html for information on backyard composting and the District’s office location. The town encourages all residents to remove organic material from the trash and bring it to the transfer station collection program and/or use a backyard compost bin. Approximately 25% of household trash is organic material that can be diverted to a compost collection or compost bin.
Construction and Bulky Items
DO NOT "DUMP" ANYTHING WITHOUT PRICE QUOTE. Please be patient and wait for an attendant.
Lids must be removed from all containers, this includes your paint cans, too. Latex paint should be completely dry before disposal before you arrive at transfer station. We do not accept oil paint, or stains!
Reuse Sheds / Swap Shops
Our sheds are available to you because of the small handful wonderful volunteers! Please make sure to read guidelines before leaving anything at these sheds.
Take it or Leave it - Useful kitchen and household items, games, tools, toys and most other usable items in reasonably good condition. If the item weights over 5 lbs please see attendant before leaving it. If your item is broken or does not work, do not leave in this shed.
Book Shed - Please do not leave dated materials or textbooks. Yes, this includes travel guides, encyclopedias, yearbooks and almanacs.
Clothing Shed - This shed is for clothing that you may still love but you just can't keep in your closet anymore. If you have clothing that is not something that is not suitable for this shed, PLEASE put it in the metal Salvation Army box (Salvation Army items must be in bags) because the Salvation Army RECYCLES fabric and shoes into new items!!
Egg Crates - one dozen size, paper crates only. Any egg crates that do not look usable, put in trash instead. NOTE: plastic egg cartons are acceptable in the recycling with bottles and cans.
Now open: Art Shed!!!
We have a new swap shed! We are excited to to offer a new space where you can find artworks, used frames, craft supplies, and other things artsy. Please leave art items or take what you will. We cannot accept liquds of any sort-so no paints, please!
