Creating a Cultural District in Leverett
There will be two meetings to present this idea to the community in Town Hall at 6:00 PM on October 6th and 6:00 PM on October 20th
Creating a Cultural District in Leverett
In 2011 the Massachusetts Cultural Council created the opportunity for cities and towns to create a Cultural District (CD). The designation can join together historic buildings, conservation areas, cultural centers, and individual artists. It need not be a specific location but can include disparate components.
A CD in Leverett is a concept that could help define who we are as a town and provide opportunities to artists and nonprofits through encouraging visitation to studios and galleries.
Creating a CD in Leverett has several advantages. It can help build a more vibrant community life by expanding public programming, encourage partnerships among local cultural workers and provide more opportunities for our community to get together. For cultural workers in Leverett it can bring more business opportunities and chances for collaboration. CDs receive annual funding through grants from the Mass Cultural Council.
The Selectboard has scheduled two meetings to present this idea to the community and to gauge local interest. We are hoping that artists, musicians, authors and other cultural workers in town will come to one of these meetings and share your ideas. The meetings will be in Town Hall at 6:00 PM on October 6th and 6:00 PM on October 20th.
We hope you can come and share your enthusiasm, ideas, and support.
