  3. Preservation Planning for Historical Assets

    • Industrial History programming - UPDATE on "A Sense of Where You Are: Getting to Know Leverett's Industrial Past' Virtual and in-person tours to Leverett's historic industrial landscape and sites." Signage program ("Town Pound" test case?) Slarrow Mill, Brushy Mtn. industries - mill, charcoal, other industries for 2022 programs?

      General Discussion...
This meeting (the 3rd this month) was called specifically to address draft CPC applications due on 12/1/21. Two versions were submitted for consideration, one which included both the creation of an alliance to refurbish historic properties and to continue and expand the ongoing "Sense of Place..." industrial heritage programming, and the second which submitted the two requests separately. It was agreed to submit them separately. The "A Sense of Where You Are" programming will incorporate interviews with living skilled craftspeople who formerly worked in the historic industries, particularly sawmills, but also perhaps also the local charcoal-making industry. Another extension of the "Sense of Place..." programming derived from suggestions made during discussion sessions after programs during the past two years, indicating a desire for permanent interpretive signage to continue to educate townspeople and visitors about historic sites in Leverett.

MOTION, moved by Eva Gibavic, seconded by Anne Schuyler: "Moved that "A Sense of Where You Are" industrial heritage programming grant proposal be submitted to the CPC on 12/1/21 as per the draft submitted to LHC by Pleun Bouricius, including "embodied history" oral history interviews with living craftsmen who worked in these industries and the inauguration of an interpretive historic signage program.".

    • LHS Collection Inventory - UPDATE - Moore's Corner Schoolhouse and Field Family Museum collections of the Leverett Historical Society inventoried and digitized.

    • Slarrow Sawmill and other prominent historic properties - UPDATE - Select Board's ad hoc committee on question of accepting ownership of North Leverett (Slarrow - Kirley) Sawmill and Dam property. Discuss Historical Commission role in preserving town's historic properties. Most are privately owned. How can the Historical Commission take a pro-active stance to encourage preservation and sustainable adaptive re-use?

      General Discussion...
Discussion regarding the submission of an application to the Community Preservation Commission for refurbishing two prominent historical properties: the former Field Library in Leverett Center and the Moores' Corner Schoolhouse in preparation for reuse to coincide with Leverett's 250th Anniversary celebration in 2024. This would be a separate request from the "Sense of Place..." programming continuation and expansion. A motion was made and accepted to proceed in submitting the proposed application on 12/1/21, with amendments to the wording as discussed. More work needs to be done, even after submission, to bring together the "alliance of stakeholders" and to secure additional bids to do the work at the two sites.

MOTION, moved by Sara Robinson, seconded by Susan Lynton: "Moved that the LHC support the submission of an application to the Community Preservation Commission to research and plan with an alliance of stakeholders to refurbish significant historic properties in two of Leverett's villages in preparation for their rededication as contributing assets at the town's 250th Anniversary in 2024.".
