  3. Historical Commission Mission and Vision

    • Mission statement - Mission & Vision statement draft

      General Discussion...
The discussion centered on the Historical Commission Mission Statement. Our draft begins with "The LHC was created by an act of Town Meeting in 1973...(under the authority of MGL...)... with a mandate to preserve, protect and develop historical assets."

We discussed the MA Historical Commission's definition which states that local historical commissions are charged with "Community-Wide Historic Preservation Planning", defined as a mandate to - "Identify, evaluate and protect the significant historic and archaeological assets of the Commonwealth".

Leverett's proposed second paragraph will spell out our definition of "historic assets". Discussion centered on how specific to be in citing contributions to our cultural heritage and periods of history. Questions were raised about whether too much specificity could result in some being left out.

We did reorder the list of Activities (7) that the Commission engages in to accomplish the Mission. The activities will match the categories of projects on the Timeline, SL is drafting.

A final area to consider as part of a Mission (Vision?) Statement is the positive "Impact" the activities will have for the community. For instance, ("..continuing to educate ourselves about Leverett's unique character builds connectedness and motivation to invest in the future...")

Anne Schuyler will revise and discussion will be continued at the May LHC meeting.

  4. LHC Activities Timeline

    • LHC Activities Timeline - Timeline illustrates Mission & Vision - draft

      General Discussion...
Request that everyone study the draft and send updates, additions or corrections to Susan Lynton to add for discussion in May. A request was made for a way of denoting "privately owned".

  5. Preservation Planning for Historical Assets

    • Industrial History programming - "A Sense of Where You Are: Getting to Know Leverett's Industrial Past' Virtual and in-person tours to Leverett's historic industrial landscape and sites." 2021 and 2022

      General Discussion...
Pleun and Eva are working on a "Zoom to the Federal Mill (Upper Sawmill River)" program, but a date has not been set. May? The team has also visited the "Chestnut Hill Mill (Chestnut Hill Brook)" off East Chestnut Hill Road, owner is Ann Ferguson, which will be the subject of the following program. That will complete the 2020-21 programs. We await the determination of the Town Meeting on Saturday, 1 May, 2021 for approval of the following year's programming. It is our hope that we may be able to return to some in-person "Sense of Place..." presentations during the course of the year. Three to four mills have potential for the focus of the new programs, among them are: F.O Pike Turning Mills (Upper Roaring Brook), H. Field Sawmill (Lower Roaring Brook), Moore Grist and Sawmill (Dudley Mill on Dudley Brook).

Susan M. will present the program funding request and answer questions on the CPC application at Town Meeting on 1 May, 2021.

    • LHS Collection Inventory - Moore's Corner Schoolhouse and Field Family Museum collections of the Leverett Historical Society inventoried and digitized.

      General Discussion...
Accepted by Community Preservation Commission, awaiting town meeting approval on 1 May, 2021.

      General Discussion...
Next meeting on Sunday April 18, 3pm, outdoors at the Leverett Library to confirm activities, solicit participants and draft a tentative timeline.

    • Schooling in Leverett - "10 to 1", One-Room Schoolhouse Oral History Project publication. Collaboration with Leverett Education Foundation to highlight Leverett Elementary School and education's historical importance in Leverett.

      General Discussion...
Update on video project: Toler Poole, Susan Lynton's grandson is working on editing a short piece of excerpts from the video's of the interviews. He found that doing it only by question feels redundant, so he is experimenting with additional visuals throughout, creating an opening and a more thematic approach. He thinks it will be about 50 minutes long. We look forward to seeing his work when he has a chance to complete it.

It was suggested to have sample "10 to 1" books at Town Meeting for sale. According to discussion on cost of printing, a price of $25 was proposed; it could include the cost of the book and mailing if necessary. An account has been set up with the town to receive the receipts from sales of the book. It might be able to support some of the planning for the 250th Anniversary of the town in 2024.
