Transfer Station - Where Trash Goes
Where it goes at the Station and afterwards
1. General Household Trash - In most cases, general household trash consists of things like packaging materials, most containers and miscellaneous sundry items. Electronics, mercury bearing waste and recyclables should not be included. Trash is deposited in the compactor, which is centrally located at the left side of the drive. Rubbish is shipped to an incineration plant in Springfield, where it is burned to create electricity.
Electronics - Anything with a circuit-board should not be included with household trash.
Circuit-boards usually have heavy metals associated with them, which become more toxic once airborne. Most electronics cost the same amount to get rid of as general trash; computer monitors, and TV’s cost more, and are prohibited from general trash by the State Waste Bans (see below). Electronics are delivered to a reclamation facility that follows good environmental practices.
Mercury Bearing Waste - These include: fluorescent lamps, thermometers, mercury switches (like the ones in older thermostats) and some flow meters. Don’t be fooled by fluorescent lamps that claim to be “green;” they contain mercury as well, it’s only that they are just under the level prohibited by the State. These items are accepted at no charge. When airborne, mercury creates problems. Please hand these items directly to an attendant. Mercury bearing wastes are picked up by a licensed vender; the mercury is reclaimed. We can still give you a new digital fever thermometer for your old mercury one.
2. Recyclables -
Recyclables are deposited in the large green roll-off containers, set north to south, along the west side of the drive. Please heed signs.
Paper recyclables include: Clean, dry: office paper, paper board (cereal boxes etc.), kraft paper (like paper bags), corrugated paper (cardboard) unwaxed packing paper, magazines, books (remove covers). No: tissue paper, six pack containers, animal food bags with waxed or plastic liners, pizza boxes, textured cardboard (like egg crates), thick cardboard tubing or juice boxes.
Please bag or tie paper.
Mixed containers recyclables include: Plastic, metal and glass containers under 2 gallons; juice and drink boxes and freezer board. Freezer board is paper board that is white when torn. No: plastic caps or lids, coat hangers, egg crates, Styrofoam, ceramics, plate glass, flat ware, scrap metal, hazardous waste containers (ie., motor oil), light bulbs, corks etc. Each of the above have their own roll-off container; there is also an over-flow container that has compartments for each. The recyclables are shipped to Springfield where they are sorted and sold to manufacturing facilities. Currently (2007) the Town receives about $28 per ton for its recyclables. There is a Town bylaw that stipulates a $15 fine per offence for not recycling.
3. Large Items -
Most large items wind up in the large open-top roll-off containers. Construction related/like materials go in green container at the north end of the Station, while metals go in the dark brown container at the east side of the station.
Construction Materials - Building construction waste, old plumbing fixtures, ceramic tiles, carpets and the like, are all considered construction & demolition (C&D) materials. These are accepted during warmer weather only (dates will be posted in the Town Newsletter); and are to be brought to the North side of the Station between the large, brown, back-up compactor container and the long white trailer. These materials are billed by weight and brought to a reclamation facility in Connecticut. Although the State does not include the recovery of these materials in our “recycling rate,” we consider them in our over-all waste diversion rate.
Scrap Metal - Scrap metal includes everything metallic from alternators to zinc coated sheeting. Old metal chairs, flatware, TV antennas, chain saws, lawn mowers (after the gas and oil have been removed), small appliances like toasters, metal doors etc. etc. There is a fee for anything over 10 pounds. Materials are brought to a salvage yard where the metals are sorted by type, then shipped to a foundry.
Major Appliances - These include dish washers, cooking stoves, hot water heaters, refrigerators and the like. Items should only be brought during warmer weather. Appliances should be brought to the same area as construction materials for weighing. Items are billed by weight; and, there is an additional fee for Freon removal of $12 . After Freon removal, appliances are treated as scrap metal.
Upholstered Furniture - Upholstered furniture (and mattresses) are not billed by weight, and are only accepted in warmer weather. Significant discounts are available if furniture arrives brokendown with fabric and cushions removed. Bring these to the C&D area; wood and metal components are recovered; cushions and fabric are trashed.
4. Reuse Area
The Reuse area is a group of sheds starting at the southeast side of the drive. These areas are mostly staffed by volunteers, and most materials left are used locally. These areas can (and have been) closed without notice when they fall into disarray. Please be thoughtful and follow postings. Leverett has been nationally recognized many times for it’s reuse efforts.
Clothes Shed - Clothes must be wearable in public. Place in either the Salvation Army Depository, or Clothes Shed. The Salvation Army facility in Springfield picks up clothing perhaps once a month while volunteers take care of the items brought to the Clothes Shed. The
Clothes Shed is toward the south end of the Reuse Area at the east side of the Station. Mothers’ have told me they clothed their children with what was left in Clothes Shed. It may look a mess, but it provides a needed service. Personal comment - It would be a mistake to think decent clothes aren’t needed by many Leverett resident’s. Since the Salvation Army has a rag program, marginal clothing should be put into their depository, not the Cloths Shed. Oil-soaked, badly fouled or tattered clothing should be trashed.
Book Shed - Do not leave moldy, mildewy, nor dated materials (ie. your 1970 highschool yearbook, travel guide or tax code). If you do have prohibited books, unless they are full of mold: soft-covered books can be put with recyclables; small, slightly moldy hard-covered books can be recycled after the covers have been removed. Badly molded or mildewed books should be trashed. The Book Shed is located at the south end of the Reuse Area. This shed is meant to be a book-swap for residents. When it’s time to leave the Station, hard covered books are shipped over-sees as part of a reading project; soft covered books have their covers removed and recycled
Swap Shop - IF YOU WOULDN’T TAKE IT, DON’T LEAVE IT! A list of do’s and don’t is painted (in red) on the door. If you aren’t sure about something, please ask. Please do not leave a box of miscellaneous items; sort its contents as best you can then properly dispose the box. Volunteers have to manage this area, and they don’t need any extra work. The Town calls it’s swap-shop the Take It or Leave it (TILI). It’s the most popular (and frequently closed) shed in the Reuse Area. That said, it is a valuable service for many. Items that seem most desired are kitchen wares, house wares, tools, all forms of games (complete), and toys. The TILI is in the center of the reuse area. Items not taken are recycled or trashed.
Electronics Shed - This is intended as temporary storage; often it is locked. Since it is very crammed, we prefer residents ask before entering this area. The electronics shed is at the north end of the reuse area, next to the Office. Electronics are delivered to a reclamation facility that follows good environmental practices.
5. Other Items -
Tires - Tires are billed by size. It’s $2.50 for a car tire, with or without, it’s rim. Regular truck size tires are $12; and tractor size are $50. After payment, tires are stored next to appliances. Tires are taken to a facility that either ships them to an incineration plant, or sells them.

Auto Related Waste -
Used Motor Oil - Please bring to automotive mechanic, Greenfield Transfer Station or a FCSWMD "Super site"click here. Put the The State Waste Bans prohibit the disposal of: mercury bearing waste (things that contain mercury) like: fluorescent lamps, thermometers and mercury switches (like the ones in older thermostats). They also prohibit the disposal of CRTs (cathode ray tubes / picture tubes) like those found in TVs and computer monitors. Refrigerators, dehumidifies and anything that contained refrigerant. Tires and major appliances are also excluded. empted oil container in the compactor. The oil is burned at a local garage; the filters are collected and recycled.

Batteries - Rechargeable, Button, and Lithium - go in the blue bin just outside the Office door. These are shipped to various reclamation facilities.

Cardboard Egg Cartons - Place in bin just inside next to attendant shed.
Propane Tanks - We will only accept tanks that are completely empty and 20 gallons or smaller. See attendant. These eventually go to a distributor for destruction or refilling.
Ink Jet Cartridges - See Attendant. These are shipped out for reclamation. Town makes a few pennies.
Anything Else - Ask someone.
Other - Other - Compost bins and recycling containers are available while supplies last. See attendant.
